Be Safe

The Brief

Great Western Railway has an ambition to be a ‘zero-harm’ workplace. Their workplaces include train stations, maintenance depots, offices or course moving trains, each of which has its own hazards.

To make them all as safe as possible GWR are promoting a workplace culture where safety is prioritised and valued.

As part of this, they wanted their managers and leaders to praise colleagues when they follow safe working practices as well as picking them up on areas that need improvement.

They asked Tantrwm to work with them to create video content that highlighted the importance of this cultural approach.

Our Approach

For us, there were two parts to this equation. Firstly, making sure that colleagues understand the behaviour that is required of them and secondly making sure that managers understand the power of positive feedback in changing workplace culture.

First Group, GWR’s parent company have a set of six ‘golden safety rules’ that they use across the business. We took these and created a series of short videos that were used on GWR’s internal comms platform. We wanted to make these videos simple and memorable.

Taking inspiration from the brilliant Australian PSA ‘Dumb Ways To Die”, we combined live-action visuals of people across the business with illustrated sections that illustrated the types of accidents that the rules are designed to prevent.

For the managers, we created a video that explained the ethos of the project and crucially included testimonials from leaders across the business about how ‘positive praise’ has helped them to more effectively lead their teams and reduce accidents.
