Knowledge Exchange
The Brief
The Royal College of Music London is one of the most prestigious conservatoires in the world. But it is also a research university and wanted to show the real world impact its research is having on people’s lives.
They asked Tantrwm to create as series of case studies, showing projects that were making a difference.
“We are delighted with the films - you really understand what we’re doing and what we want to present“
- Emma Hewitt, Royal College of Music London
Our Approach
We really wanted to put the people who are benefitting from the RCM’s research up front and centre. This would create an emotional connection with the stories.
One of the case studies looked at how a music group for young people with Down Syndrome has built the confidence and life skills of the people who attend it. They said it gave them a voice.
For the film, we used the music that the young people had written as a key part of the soundtrack and had one of the young people be the narrator.
This makes the film really emotionally affecting and means that our film is aligned with the ethos of the project.
This video looks at how RCM are using their world-class expertise in music education to upskill the staff of local nurseries.
Ensuring children from some of London’s most economically deprived communities have access to quality music education from a young age.

We identified three main audiences for this along with aspects of the project that would engage them.
Based upon this we decide to use the message of improving educational outcomes as the prism through which the story would be told, with each of the other strands feeding into it.
Once we had identified who we wanted to reach and what aspects of the project would interest them we worked with the RCM to define what we wanted the video to help them achieve.
This slate of videos looking at Knowledge Exchange projects had the following objectives.
- Encourage engagement in the projects (in this case, from nurseries and music tutors)
- Support applications for further funding
- Brand building for the RCM and its community engagement work
The video achieved these by demonstrating how the project helped each of the target audiences to achieve their own objectives.
