The Only Steinway Exclusive Conservatoire in Europe
The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama is now Europes only Steinway exclusive conservatoire.
To mark the occasion RWCMD asked us to document the delivery and set up of 24 Steinway pianos.
All 24 then performed a piece specially written for the occasion.
We only had a limited time to get everything. Using multiple cameras and our bespoke live mix studio meant that we got a huge amount of shots in a very short time.
5 robotic cameras (one mounted on an 8m jib/crane) were deployed gathering spiraling dreamlike images and sweeping vistas of the pianos. These were then cut live as though being live streamed providing the college with a film of the whole performance. It also meant we got shots that would’ve been impossible to get had we only used hand held cameras.
After the performance had ended the college required a short social media film of the day. And they needed it ASAP!
We acquired a room at the college and immediately set about editing the footage and by the end of the day the film was ready.
8 hours from starting filming to finished film.
Not bad going if we do say so ourselves.
24 Pianos
Celebrating the College’s new status gave composer and MA Composition student Julia Plaut a daunting but inspirational challenge.
Having written a celebratory piece especially for the day, she had to work with 24 pianists playing brand new Steinways, with only an hour’s rehearsal.
The sound was nothing short of magical.
