Small business ups its game…..and thrives

We are big fans of local businesses and believe that they can do branding just as well as the big boys. So it’s great to see a little business in Aberdare doing just that. And that business is Peppers.

This isn’t a case of us blowing our own trumpet either, as we didn’t work on this project but we think they have done such a good job that everyone should know about it.

Everyone in and around Aberdare knows Peppers is that nice little spot to get a bite to eat and a good cup of coffee. Well these guys decided to invest and create a brand for themselves. They have always done a good cup of coffee, but now have they’re own brand of coffee. Bradleys Coffee.

Jim and Elaine’s (the owners) determination and their brand’s success has, in a very short space of time, propelled them from a nice little cafe/restaurant into a coffee chain, as they now have three premises in the Aberdare area alone, which are doing extremely well and are continually growing.

Why brand a small business?

Branding makes association between you and your product or service. For Bradley’s having a consistent look and feel at all of their cafes means that existing customers from one cafe are more likely to use the others. It means instead of having three single cafes that have to stand out all by themselves, they have one single brand where the quality of each cafe improves the reputation of them all.

Bradley's and Branding

So with this in mind what Jim and Elaine have done in each venue is to use these guidelines to be consistent in portraying a good quality product. Using the strength of the logo, colour schemes and good service, creates this association with the coffee and the relaxing environments to enjoy it in.

Branding is a way of clearly highlighting what makes your product or service different to, and more desirable than, anyone else’s. Bradley’s elevate their product and service from being just another coffee shop, to become something with a unique character and promise. The whole experience creates an emotional connection with the product and branding so consumers who choose Bradley’s Coffee and service base it on both an emotional and pragmatic judgement.

You can see how this small cafe/restaurant in Aberdare has now developed its self into a chain of coffee shops which is growing rapidly and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a chain pop up in Cardiff or further afield in the near future.

I'm a small business - why do I need a brand?

If you are a small firm or a sole trader, you could be forgiven for thinking that branding is not for you. “Big names spend money on branding, small companies just get on with the job” is a common refrain. But any business of any size can have a great brand with a bit of time and effort. It makes you look professional and helps get work in through the door.
